How to Associate a Dataset with a Data Asset

You can associate any number of datasets with your data asset, but the asset must first be submitted (to the platformnot to Data Services) for review.  Be sure that this is done before proceeding.
After creating your Data Asset and adding its metadata,  select “Submit for Review” in the upper right corner,  then “Continue,” choose the “Public” option, and finally “Submit for Approval.”  This does not automatically publish your data, but it will alert the Data Services Team that the data asset is complete.

You will be given an option to go to the asset’s Primer page to view your work, or you can add a new dataset at this point.  Each dataset you create needs to have its metadata filled out, the same as the asset.  But you can use the time-saving Template tool to copy the asset's metadata to the dataset.  One important difference is that you will most likely want to type a distinct, more narrowly focused dataset description so that it does not simply repeat the broader description of the asset. When you have a completed dataset with all the required metadata content entered, you are ready to associate the dataset with the asset.   The on Click “Associate with other assets,” as shown in the photo at the top of this page.*

Click “Add,” and then locate and select your asset.  Finally, click “Save.”  Your dataset is now associated with your data asset!

*Alternatively, the dataset may be associated with the data asset on the Edit menu.  Go to the Data Overview tab and locate the “Use As A Template” box.  Click “Select Data Asset or Dataset.”  Choose the data asset related to your dataset and select the option “Set as parent and apply as template.”
